Description:

As the government agency responsible for regulating capital raising, securities trading, and investor protection in British Columbia, the BC Securities Commission aims to help small businesses understand how to raise money in a timely and efficient way and avoid unintended compliance problems.

Join the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade's Small Business Council and experts from the BC Securities Commission to learn more about how you can raise money for your small business through investors.

What you will gain by attending:

  • Details on when securities laws apply to your business and what they are.
  • Tips and information on different ways in which private companies can raise capital under securities laws.
  • Small group breakout sessions to facilitate discussion on how to apply these tips to various scenarios.

Speakers:

Nazma Lee
Nazma Lee is a senior legal counsel in the Corporate Finance department of the British Columbia Securities Commission. Since joining the BCSC in 2009, Nazma has worked on various policy projects, including on capital raising exemptions, corporate governance, proxy voting, and takeover bids. Prior to joining the BCSC, Nazma spent two years with an international law firm in London, UK. Before moving to London, Nazma practiced securities law at a large national firm in Vancouver.

Elliott Mak
Elliott Mak is a senior legal counsel in the Corporate Finance department of the British Columbia Securities Commission. Elliott works on developing policy in the exempt market, including the securities crowdfunding rules. Elliott is also part of the BC Securities Commission Tech Team that actively engages in outreach to the BC technology community. Prior to joining the BCSC, Elliott's legal practice included providing legal advice to both senior and venture issuers in areas such as capital raising and M&A.

Both Nazma and Elliott work in BCSC's Corporate Finance Division, which oversees capital raising and corporate disclosure for B.C.
