Vancouver -- Major market changes such as the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) takeover of the Canadian Venture Exchange (CDNX) will be among critical issues tackled at Capital Ideas, a one-day BC Securities Commission conference June 6.

"Securities markets and securities regulation are changing extremely rapidly," said BCSC Chair Doug Hyndman. "We see that in the realignment of exchanges in Canada and the changing business models of securities dealers and advisers.

"This conference is a chance for the Commission to get together with securities professionals and industry players to discuss their views and concerns about regulatory responses to current market trends."

Investment dealers, portfolio managers, mutual fund dealers, compliance officers, securities lawyers, and company directors and executives are among those expected to exchange views and discuss regulatory changes with the Commission during the day.

TSE President and Chief Executive Barbara Stymiest headlines a list of speakers and panelists that include BCSC commissioners, senior Commission staff, prominent BC professionals and entrepreneurs to discuss issues and trends such as:

  • The future of capital markets in BC
  • The BCSC's new approach to regulation
  • A regulator's role in making markets fair and efficient

Key speakers include: Ken Shields, president of Raymond James Ltd.; Pacific Rim Mining Corp. President Catherine McLeod-Seltzer; and Harry Jaako, chief executive of Discovery Capital Corp.

Senior regulators will give their perspective on the "big picture" and also address specific concerns and challenges in such areas as regulatory compliance and enforcement.

The June 6 conference will run from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Hotel, 1133 West Hastings Street.
