Vancouver -- The B.C. Securities Commission and the Richmond Public Library are teaming up to offer two free seminars on avoiding traditional and online investment scams.

Representatives from the securities commission will be in Richmond to show investors how to better protect themselves and their investments from frauds and unscrupulous salespeople. Learn how to identify an investment scam, how to check out the background of a financial adviser and how to determine if an investment is suitable for your circumstances. And with online investing a more common practice nowadays, a session on the problems and risks involved with trading online will also be held.

"Our goal is to give investors the knowledge and tools to protect themselves and safeguard their life's savings," said Doug Hyndman, BCSC chair. "Each year the BCSC hears from many people who bought investments that were sold with misleading information. We want to show you how to prevent that from happening to you."

The first session, Investigate Before You Invest, is scheduled for Tuesday, November 20. It will offer general tips and insight on how to avoid getting conned or making inappropriate investments. The second session, Investing on the Internet, is slated for the following Tuesday, November 27. This seminar will focus on cyber-fraud and the risks people need to aware of when venturing online to invest.

Both seminars run from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Richmond Public Library's Brighouse (Main) Branch, Lecture Hall, 7700 Minoru Gate in Richmond. People can get more information or register for the sessions by visiting any branch of the Richmond Public Library or by calling 604-231-6405 or online at www.yourlibrary.ca/libraryonline/.

The B.C. Securities Commission is the independent provincial government agency responsible for regulating trading in securities and exchange contracts within B.C.
