The British Columbia Securities Commission will offer two more free information sessions in Vancouver -- both on Wednesday, January 10, 1996 -- to help securities industry participants get up to speed on important changes to the Securities Act and Regulations that came into force January 1. The changes were published in a special supplement to the Commission's November 24, 1995 Weekly Summary.

Many securities industry participants were unable to get to information sessions held during the week of December 4, and have asked the Commission to offer the sessions again.

To accommodate that demand, the Commission has scheduled the following sessions at the Robson Square Conference Centre, Vancouver:

9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. -- For issuers and for lawyers who practice in the securities field.
2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. -- For registrants (securities dealers, brokers, advisers, underwriters, mutual fund sales persons and others registered under the Securities Act.)

The Commission is asking those who plan to attend the Vancouver sessions to reserve a place by calling the Commission at (604) 660-4800 or toll free 1-800-373-6393 -- preferably by January 8.

The Commission also is scheduling information sessions in Kelowna (Jan. 17), Kamloops (Jan. 18), Prince George (Jan. 24) and Victoria (Jan. 29).

The changes to the legislation address several investor protection concerns and increase the resources and enforcement tools available to the Commission. They tighten provisions concerning registration for trading in, or advising about, securities. They also require underwriters to register separately, increase capital requirements for some registrants, impose new hold periods on securities in some circumstances, and update financial reporting requirements for public companies.

The B.C. Securities Commission is an independent Crown agency of the provincial government responsible for regulating trading in securities and exchange contracts in British Columbia.
